Chapter 8

The Art of Detection

I had the gibberish on my mind since I glanced at it back at Dracula’s library. I had hoped to make sense of it since then, but I could not, until I saw another similar note, with half-written letters, becoming full when put side by side. It formed a brief paragraph, another entry in Mr. Doose’s journal that read,

“I had never intended to kill Bruno, not even after what he did to me, but sometimes, you cannot control fate; it is out of your hands. I could not forgive myself for what I had done, but I do not need to, what I did was not even wrong, let alone morally decadent.”

I read the paragraph aloud.

“This is it! The evidence, the confession, the motive… everything! This is it,” Mia cheered excitedly.

“Huh? It is,” I replied.

“What is it?”

“I don't know, it just seems… too easy,” I replied.

“Too easy? We have been through three different worlds, and this is too easy?” Mia asked.

“Think about it, we have all the evidence, all the answers in this one journal: the confession, the motive, the photographs. It just seems too convenient, as if someone is trying to frame Mr. Doose,” I offered my point of view.

“You are over thinking about it. I know that Mr. Doose wrote this because I am aware of his handwriting and it completely matches,” Mia assured me.

“Well then, there is nothing left to do except find him. I say we split up and find him in the party, it is not like someone is trying to kill us here, so no point in sticking together,” I produced a plan. Everyone agreed with it before heading back out into the party. We decided to meet back at the library in fifteen minutes.

All of us spread out, moving our eyes towards separate groups, and moving with purpose. We were failing miserably to find him; he was now here to be seen and certainly not amongst the party.

Fifteen minutes passed and I headed back to the library. I was the first one there. Grace came in second, a stone-cold face and uninterested in everything else.

“Grace, listen,” I started to console her but was interrupted by the grannies.

“Did you find him? Is he here?” asked Susie, ignoring the obvious.

“Can you see him around?” I asked rhetorically.

“Snarky again,” she made a remark.

I looked at Grace with concern on my face, she glanced at me but did not react to it. Finally, Mia came in, no one was with her, much to our disappointment.

“Nothing?”

“Nothing,” Mia answered.

“Well, what now? What if we lost him?” I began to become pessimistic about it.

“Lost him where? He cannot travel to different books,” Mia replied.

“He cannot? Did we not see him on Titanic? Now he is here, in The Great Gatsby, I think we can, and what if he did?” I completely expressed my concern when we heard a book falling from a shelf.

All of us turned back, trying to find the source of the sound.

“What was that?” Tess asked.
